What a Chuy collects, what reaches this app, and who can see it

Who runs this service
Chuy Analytics is operated by Futuri Labs, part of Futuri Media. Questions about this page or about your data go to patrickhartnett@futurimedia.com.
What a Chuy collects
A Chuy is a small sensor unit placed at a venue. It listens for two kinds of radio signal that nearby phones and other devices send out on their own: WiFi probe requests and Bluetooth Low Energy advertisements. Each of those signals carries a hardware address (a MAC address) of the device that sent it.
- The unit hashes every address with a secret salt that is unique to that unit before anything is stored or sent. The raw address never leaves the unit.
- What the unit stores and sends is counts per minute (unique devices, packets, new versus returning, signal strength summaries) and per-device records keyed by the hashed address, which are used to work out how many distinct devices were present in each 30-minute window.
- No content of any communication is captured. The unit does not collect names, accounts, messages, or the location of any individual person.
What reaches this app
Units send their files over a private VPN into Futuri's Amazon Web Services account, where they are stored in an S3 bucket in the us-east-2 (Ohio) region and loaded into this app's database. The app shows counts and ratios: how many devices were seen, when, and how that compares over time. It does not show individual people, and nothing in it names a person or a device.
Your account
Accounts are created by invitation, where you choose your own password, or directly by Futuri Labs staff, who set an initial one that you can change at any time in Settings. Your account holds your name, email address, organisation, phone number, time zone and colour-mode preference, and a hash of your password (never the password itself).
When you sign in, the time is recorded on your account and the server log notes the sign-in and the network address it came from. Failed sign-in attempts are counted per account name and per network address so that repeated guessing is slowed down. Actions you take in the app that affect other people or your Chuys, such as granting or revoking access, placing or changing an order, changing your profile or exporting data, are written to an audit log that Futuri Labs uses for security and support.
Orders
When you request units, the order form asks for a shipping name, address and phone number so that we can ship them to you. These are kept with the order and shown to the Futuri Labs staff who fulfil it.
The app sends email for invitations, password resets, email-address changes and order updates. Messages are sent through Amazon Simple Email Service from noreply@chuy.futurilabs.com. We do not send marketing email from this app.
Who can see what
Access is per Chuy. Owners of a Chuy see its data and can add or remove other owners and viewers; viewers see its data and can export it. Futuri Labs staff can see every Chuy, every account and the audit log in order to operate the service and give support.
How long we keep data
For now, the data from units is kept indefinitely, both the raw files in S3 and the counts in this app. If you own a Chuy and want its data removed, contact Futuri Labs at patrickhartnett@futurimedia.com and we will arrange it. Account details are kept while the account exists.
Where the data lives
The app and its data are hosted in the United States, on Amazon Web Services in Futuri's account.
Changes to this page
